The slang term “Pajón” in Spanish is used to describe any sort of “disorderly hair” or “afro like texture and size of hair. Albeit, it’s normally used in a negative way, these days I see a slight shift towards a more positive view of the word. With the #teamnatural craze still ongoing it’s no wonder that more and more Latinas are jumping on the bandwagon of leaving their beautiful curls however they grow on their heads and foregoing chemical treatments to permanently remove them. I’ve personally blogged a little bit about my natural hair journey before and am extremely happy that my curls have come back to life after many years of damaging them.
Carolina Contreras creator of MissRizos.com has started to pave her way through this like-minded community to promote afro-textured hair. She is on a mission to change our society’s standards of beauty (specifically within the Latino community). Her online platform helps those in the process of “going natural” combat the often hurtful criticism and backlash that can come from making the switch. Our hair is not pelo malo or “bad hair” it’s our own and beautiful in its own unique way.
Pick up one of her awesome T-Shirts if you want to support her movement, she even includes items with the slogan “Yo Amo Su Pajón” or I Love His/Her Afro for those who want to support but can’t don huge hair themselves (I tried to puff mine up but it wasn’t cooperating this day). Her tote bags, mugs and much more all could make a great holiday gift for the curly cue in your life.
